Steps to take to enable VPPA on a new embedded content provider
The Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA) is a U.S. federal law that protects individuals' privacy by regulating the collection, use, and sharing of video-related data without explicit user consent. This law applies to any website that embeds videos and collects or shares user data, requiring businesses to be transparent and accountable when handling sensitive information.
Whether your website uses embedded videos for marketing, education, or user engagement, these videos can inadvertently share user data with third parties without consent, leading to legal risks, fines, and reputational harm. Clym's VPPA solution helps you adhere to VPPA requirements by obtaining clear user consent, managing preferences, allowing users to withdraw their consent, and controlling data-sharing practices responsibly.
Enabling VPPA is an easy 3-step process:
1. Sign in to your Clym Portal
You should have received a magic link in your initial onboarding email. Please click Sign in from the email to get started. Alternatively, navigate to Clym's home page and click on Sign in in the upper right-hand corner.
2. Open your Website Settings
From the left side menu, select Website Settings. From here, you will see a list of all your domains, each with its unique settings.
Click the settings wheel next to the domain that you would like to change the default language for. This will open the website settings for that specific domain.
3. Enable VPPA
From the Website settings menu, select the Embedded Content drop-down to open the section. Click ADD EMBEDDED CONTENT SERVICE+.
In the pop-up window, provide the content name, description, accepted domains, data processor, processing purposes, and data points. Additionally, toggle Requires VPPA consent on. Click Save Service.
